Senior Outing to Broomieknowe“The St. Boswells Seniors ended their playing season with their customary outing and this year it was to Broomieknowe Golf Club where we were well looked after by Mark Patchet and the Clubhouse staff.
The golf was affected by a rather constant drizzle but it did not put George Hogg off. George won the trophy handsomely with 36 points. Which goes to show that old age and cunning can beat youth and vigour – I refer of course to the runner up – the Young Pretender Chris Bell with 34 points and another Young Pretender Roy Barrie, who used his embarrassingly new handicap to good effect by securing third place with 33 points. After the golf a fine meal refreshed the weary golfers who returned to the Borders with the firm view that we should try this course again next year and hope for better weather!
Thanks to all who attended and donated prizes for the event. They are much appreciated.
Finally – don’t forget the legendary Seniors Christmas lunch on Friday 9th December 2016. (Raffle Prizes for the lunch gratefully accepted!) A notice will be placed on the Seniors Board shortly or names to Anne Forrest.”
Senior Match Report Against Kelso Away.
“After a rather disappointing season, St Boswells Seniors, armed with a full squad of 12, descended upon Kelso. Clearly St Boswells were not favourite but thanks to some thoughtful coaching from the Senior Captain – along the lines of ” if you don’t win then don’t think about turning up for lunch” seemed to work. St Boswells won 4 matches to 2. A big thanks to all and especially to those who turned out at the last minute to make up our team.
Looking forward, our next event is the SENIORS / LADIES SOCIAL MATCH i.e scones and 9 holes of golf on Monday 5 September at 9:30. Please put your name on the list on the notice board.
Don’t forget our annual outing to BROOMIEKNOWE this year to be held on Wednesday 14 September – sheet also on the Senior Notice Board.”
Senior Match Report Against Gifford away
“After a convincing win against Gifford at home in May, St Boswells Seniors, armed with a full squad of 12 keen players, descended upon Gifford with degree of confidence. Alas this was short lived as Gifford exacted true revenge and allowed us to win only one match beating us in all the other matches (just as we had done to them in May). As they say what goes around comes around! Nevertheless some (intermittently) fine golf was played by all on Gifford’s well tended course. Thank you to all who supported the team.
Looking forward, our next event is the Seniors August Medal on Wednesday 3 August. Thereafter we have a match against KELSO (away) on Wednesday 24 August and the final match of the year against LAUDER (home) on Monday 29 August 2016. Don’t forget our annual outing to BROOMIEKNOWE this year to be held on Wednesday 14 September – sheets are up on the Senior Notice Board for names for all these fixtures”
Senior Match Report Against Duns at Home
St Boswells Seniors played a new (and unscheduled) fixture against Duns seniors on Wednesday 22 June at St Boswells. Our team of eight assembled for coffee while watching a heavy rain shower over the Eildons; but we need not have worried. Our Captain advised us that his phone forecast that there was zero percent chance of rain as we watched it fall! The good news was it turned out a sunny and breezy day, the bad news was we were beaten in three of four matches. Notwithstanding, the team had a great day and exchanged tales of what could have been in post prandial conversation. The lunches are excellent and are an incentive to play home fixtures on this fact alone – some say they will just skip the golf and go straight to lunch! Thanks to Anne and Doreen for all their hard work in this department. This new fixture is to be repeated as an away match next year and it will probably be held on Thursday 3 August 2017 – so buy your 2017 diary now!
A reminder that the Gents Seniors Open will be held on Wednesday 6th July – spaces still available – call Anne to reserve your place.
The 4th Seniors Qualifier & Medal will be held on Wednesday 13th July so don’t miss it.
Finally the Senior match v Gifford will be held at Gifford on Monday 25 July. This is a popular event so get your name up soon. In the unlikely event that we are oversubscribed preference will be given to those members who have played regularly in previous matches.
Entry sheets for all these events will be on the Notice Board soon.
